Mankato
Tom Emmer kicked off a statewide tour today in Mankato contrasting himself with the other four candidates for governor on the issues of taxation, government reform and job creation. Emmer is the only candidate in the race who has pledged to grow private sector jobs in Minnesota without raising taxes.
“The Minnesota Vikings, who begin training camp here in Mankato today, have a pretty good playbook, making it all the way to the NFC Championship game last year,” said Emmer. “My friends in the DFL party have their own training camp of sorts next week with their primary election.
“But the Democrats in this state have been going to the bookshelf and dusting off the same old playbook for years. And we know what their playbook looks like: feed the growth in government with higher taxes, take money out of the economy and stifle private sector job growth.
“Democrats in this state are unwilling to solve our budget problems by reforming the way state government works. They are unwilling to change a system that sees increased wages for state employees while wages in the private sector decline. They are unwilling to change a system that has expensive health care plans for state government while most families are concerned about their health care costs and access. They are unwilling to change a system that provides generous retirement benefits for government employees while the rest of us are watching our 401ks move up and down with the market and wonder whether we can afford to retire.
“And most importantly, they are unwilling to understand that the only job growth that will return our state to prosperity has to occur in the private sector, not through more government jobs.
“Our playbook includes redesigning government from the ground up based on our priorities. A redesigned government that will require less money in taxes from the private economy, allowing it to grow and prosper for many years to come.”
After the Mankato stop, Emmer held rallies in Detroit Lakes and Duluth and ended the day in St. Paul at an upbeat gathering of supporters. Today’s events are the latest in Emmer’s Freedom and Prosperity tour that has taken the campaign to over 60 stops in cities across the state.
