Tom Emmer kicked off a two-day tour of Minnesota businesses today, part of his Freedom and Prosperity Project focusing on jobs and the economy. He will talk with business owners and job creators in Saint Paul, Mankato, Duluth, Bemidji, Moorhead and Alexandria about the challenges they face creating jobs in today’s economy. The first stop was the Eagle Street Grille in Saint Paul, owned by Joe Kasel and Kevin Geisen.

“While we have some pretty strong ideas about what to do to grow this economy, I think it’s important to listen to the men and women who will actually do the work,” said Emmer. “Economic recovery will not come from Saint Paul, it will come from small businesses like the Eagle Street Grille.”

“Leadership is about more than setting a state budget. Leadership is setting priorities, sticking to them, and then making sure we get things done. That’s not budgeting, that’s fundamentally changing things for the better.

“Government may be the most important employer in Saint Paul, but it is the rest of the state that pays the bills. We will talk to manufacturers and employers of all stripes this week asking what they see as critical to get our economy moving again.

“We will ask them how government hinders their efforts, and how government can help. Not through phony ‘stimulus,’ but through enabling them where we can, and getting out of the way when we must.”

The hospitality industry in Minnesota has over 261,000 employees and accounts for $10 billion in economic activity. Emmer talked with business owners and industry officials about the challenges they face growing their businesses and creating jobs such as minimum wage laws and tip credits, permitting and regulations and tax policies that discourage growth.

Emmer and his running mate Annette Meeks launched the Freedom and Prosperity Project on May 26, 2010 promising to “ensure state government works for the people, not the other way around. Only by listening first can government work the way it’s supposed to.”

Tom Emmer is the Republican-endorsed candidate for Governor. Annette Meeks is the Republican-endorsed candidate for Lieutenant Governor.
