If you need a perfect example of the House and Senate Democrat leadership choosing political expediency over long-term reform, look no further than education. Instead of passing the education reforms put forward by Governor Pawlenty to improve the teaching profession in Minnesota, the Democrats bowed to pressure from a self-interested union boss and never seriously considered any real education reform during the recently concluded legislative session.
Education Minnesota Union Boss Tom Dooher spends more money on lobbyists to influence the legislative process and the election of Democrats than anyone in Minnesota, and this year he got his money’s worth from Democrat leaders in the Minnesota House and Senate.
Creating accountability by connecting student achievement to job performance is a common sense reform that is long overdue. The Emmer administration, with help from reform-minded Minnesotans, will not be afraid to change the status quo in order to keep Minnesota’s nation-leading position in education.
We will deal openly, honestly and aggressively with Mr. Dooher and any other special interest that refuses to put Minnesota’s best interest ahead of their self-interest.
